From Lead

  1. Take Highway 85 (not 385) southwest of Lead.  Near top of hill (~ 3 miles) there is highway sign that says Rochford 15 miles.
  2. Turn left onto blacktop road to Rochford.
  3. Travel ~ 6 miles until you see the Mickelson Trail Dumont Trailhead on right of road.
  4. On left side of road is green street sign that says Juso Ranch Road.
  5. Turn left onto Juso Ranch Road (gravel), follow blue signage to Pathways Spiritual Sanctuary parking lot (~ 1.3 miles).

Alternate route from Rapid City
and southern Black Hills

(shorter and faster but includes 6 miles of gravel)

  1. If you choose to come directly from Rapid City (shorter and faster) take Scenic Highway 44 to Highway 385. (From southern Black Hills the following directions begin at the junction of Highway 44 and Highway 385).
  2. Turn right and travel to Highway mile marker 110.
  3. Turn left onto Custer Crossing gravel road #256.  This is not marked well but is at top of hill at mile marker 110.  Only road going to the left and no road to right.
  4. Take Custer Crossing road ~ 6 miles (slow and winding) which ends at Rochford Road.
  5. Turn right onto Rochford Road and travel ~3 miles north to the Mickelson Trail Dumont Trailhead on the left.
  6. On right side of road is green street sign that says Juso Ranch Road.
  7. Turn right onto Juso Ranch Road (gravel), follow blue signage to Pathways Spiritual Sanctuary parking lot (~ 1.3 miles).

Weather

The weather is typical mountain weather with temperatures generally 10-15 degrees cooler than temperatures on the surrounding plains, including Rapid City. Layered clothing is advised as temperatures can change rapidly.  Umbrellas are available at the gate for use in case of rain.

Pathways Spiritual Sanctuary is an outdoor experience located at 6,100 feet elevation in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota. Walking paths meander through forest and meadow and lead to inspirational bronze sculptures, a meditative labyrinth, hand-hewn benches and bronze plaques with inspiring quotes to contemplate.

Handicap access

Walking paths are not handicap accessible, but many individuals who cannot walk the entire path can walk the first one quarter mile. There are four shaded benches in this section to sit and enjoy Pathways.

  2. Please stay on the designated pathways
  3. You enter at your own risk
  4. Do not smoke or light any fires
  5. Pathways are uneven so walk with care
  6. There are portable toilet facilities but no water
  7. Dogs are allowed if on leash and are well-behaved and do not bark
  8. Cell phone service is limited
  9. No group events
